An historical note as to the use of deficits as a weapon to cut social spending. During the Reagan administration, Stockman admitted that the reason behind Reagan’s grotesque military spending was long term planning to run up deficits to cut social security and medicare.
Dear Chas Powell: As a starting point for print material I would suggest you try reading The Scourge of Neoliberalism by Dr. Rasmus. In my view, it is one of the most important books in the past ten years. It explains, among other things, the origins of what is called the “double deficit” the financial tool used by the US to run up huge deficits and engage in military adventures all over the world. The book sets the stage for our current political and economic crisis.
